„Gyerekkoromban nálunk minden nap azzal végződött, hogy vagy édesanyám, vagy édesapám mesélt nekem. Ne úgy képzeljétek, hogy elővettek egy meséskönyvet, s elkezdtek felolvasni belőle! A mi családunkban mindenki tudott történeteket kitalálni. Édesanyámnál megrendelhettem, kiről szeretnék hallani, ki legyen a mese hőse…” – emlékezik vissza Szabó Magda a gyerekkorára. Egy ilyen édesanyjától megrendelt mese volt Valentin története is, amelyet ő csak utólag lejegyzett.
